The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a widely recognized language proficiency test, accepted by over 9,000 top universities worldwide as proof of English proficiency. It assesses the Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing skills of candidates. Many Indian students take the TOEFL for various purposes, such as pursuing a high school diploma, bachelor’s degree, employment, or higher education opportunities. Indian candidates often prefer the TOEFL over the IELTS due to their tendency to achieve higher scores. The test does not involve interviews, and scores remain anonymous.
According to ETS, Indian test-takers typically score an average of 24 out of 30 in Speaking, Writing, and Listening sections but face challenges with the advanced vocabulary in the Reading section. An overall average TOEFL score of 95 can help candidates secure admission to Tier 2 colleges in the USA and Canada.
The TOEFL iBT is a popular choice among candidates due to its convenience and minimal resource requirements. To support test-takers unable to access test centers during the COVID-19 pandemic, ETS introduced the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. This version is available globally, except in Mainland China and Iran. The test follows the same format and scoring system as the regular TOEFL exam and is overseen by a live human proctor through ProctorU.
